Timberrrrrr!!!
GREATER VICTORIA SCOUT SPRING CHALLENGE CAMP

This camp’s theme is Forestry, to help promote the 100 year anniversary of the B.C. Forest Service.

The camp-etition is set for Friday May 4 to 6, 2012 at Camp Barnard.

All Scout Leaders, please email or call by Friday April 6th to indicate whether you will attend and your approximate numbers. (Scouter Terry Lanktree at springchallengecamp@victoriascouts.ca or 250-656-2523). This is not the full registration form (see below); this is for planning purposes and equipment purchases.

This camp’s challenges are organized around the B.C. Forest Service centenary (www.bcfs100.ca) and include:

  • Campsite signaling station
  • Lumberjack Legumes (dinner competition)
  • Station competitions (including knots, ropes, and logic puzzle challenges)

Cost is $15 per participant (youth and Leader), (payable to Scouts Canada, GVA) which includes crest, prizes and camping fees.

Troops are expected to arrive at Camp Barnard on Friday night and set-up in the YUKON field. This is the lower back field, past the main parking lot and down the hill. Pit toilets are there, as is water. You will not be able to drive to your site; you will be expected to get the gear to the lumber camp from the upper parking lots. There will be a map sent to all registered groups so there is no confusion this camp.

There will be no specific group activities Friday evening. A campfire will be set up for those who want to join for fun at the creek side fire pit.

Opening will be Saturday at 9 am.

Saturday’s events will include a number of stations, where Scouts will be awarded points. There will be some free time in the late afternoon, where Scouts will be expected to complete their signaling station. Free time will be followed by a wide game and the Lumberjack Legume cook-off, which earns points for taste, ingredients, presentation, and cooking method.

The signaling station will be an inter-troop communication exercise, so plan to work with neighbouring troops.

Leaders may help with the campsite, but are encouraged to mentor the youth to do as much as possible on their own. Stations are Scout-Only activities; any help from leaders will result in loss of points.

Saturday’s group campfire (8 pm) at Creek Side is also a competition. Each troop will be required to have:

  1. one skit
  2. one song
  3. one cheer
  4. one story/comment/meaningful statement. The goal here is to have one Scout from each troop, in the security of the darkness, speak to the camp on an issue such as:
    1. what Scouting means to them
    2. something that has impressed or inspired them in the past year
    3. a problem they see in the world and a suggestion of how it could be fixed
    4. a problem they have with a request for comments on how to resolve it
    5. any serious issue they wish to raise

The story/comment/meaningful statement is not meant to be long, although it should be at least a minute in development. It should be similar to a Scouter’s Five, but from the perspective of the Scout. If no Scout is prepared to speak then as a last resort a Scouter can fill the gap.

  5. Participation on these 4 points will be scored and the troops will be judged on their campfire participation.

Sunday - closing horseshoe will end around 12 (noon). Departure time should be estimated by each troop, depending on how long you think your camp clean-up will take after horseshoe.

Troops are responsible for their own food, tents, gear, happiness etc.

Leaders: please register using the Event Registration Form.

Registration forms and fees are due by Friday April 27th. Bonus points will be awarded to groups which are early for both April 6th and April 27th deadlines.
