Klondike Derby

Excitement is mounting in anticipation of the Annual Klondike Derby competition. The Eleventh (11th) ANNUAL Klondike Derby is not far away.

PLACE:  ROYAL ROADS UNIVERSITY, Victoria, British Columbia
TIME:  Saturday, March 2, 2013, 9 am to 4 pm
COST:  $60.00 per team.  Cost includes ten Klondike Derby crests.
Payable to:  Scouts Canada-Klondike

The Derby will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 to see who wins the “Skookum Jim” trophy.  The event seems to always sell out.  Teams have been travelling from all over the Island and the Mainland to participate.  The winners for 2012 were 1st Neck Point B with a score of 344.5, Second place went to 12th Garry Oak A and third to 10th Juan de Fuca.

Last year there were 32 teams of both Scout groups and Venturer Scout Companies.  We cannot really accommodate any more, so get your registration in soon to avoid disappointment.

A past comment on the Derby: “I have got a group who have never been to the Klondike Derby learning "new" skills so they can make a showing at the Derby.  I am glad you got that going because it sure is a hook to get some of the kids involved.”

The main emphasis of the Klondike Derby is teamwork.  Promoting basic outdoor skills and teamwork makes preparing for the Klondike easy.  Not only does the Derby provide a fun day for the participants it provides a focus for planning many meetings leading up to it.  There are also many badge requirements covered by participation.

The Klondike Derby is a contest requiring teamwork and tests the "Scouting Skills" of Scouts.  Teams of 4 to 8 members pull a wagon over a course of approximately 4 km through the woods around Royal Roads University.  The team visits ten Klondike "towns" where the "town mayor" assigns the team a particular task or activity.  Points are awarded to the team based on how well it performs the task, the speed and the teamwork.

Events have in the past include aerial crossing/runway, Identification, First Aid, Lashing, Equipment Check/lunch stop, Log Sawing, Obstacle Course, 8 man Skis, and Compass.

Leaders:  SPECIAL NOTE FOR VOLUNTEERS.
We will need a couple of new teams this year to run stations as some of our dedicated teams have moved or retired.  If you are willing to spend the day having fun, we can give you the plan of what to do.  It’s all planned (although you can add to it if you like). If you can help or know anyone who might be able to (even if it is just to lend a hand), please contact James Legh at the contact numbers below.

Do not forget the John Fraser Memorial Award.  This award is presented each year to the team with the “best” overall Klondike Cart in the competition.  The award is in honor of John Fraser, a Scouter who was active in Victoria for many years.  Judging will occur during the lunch stop.  Carts will be judged on:

  • Durability
  • Appearance
  • Overall design
