Round ‘Em Up Scouts
GREATER VICTORIA SCOUT FALL CHALLENGE CAMP
The competition is on for Friday October 14 to 16, 2011 at Camp Barnard.
Even if you do not know how many youth will participate, please email or call as soon as possible to indicate whether you will attend and your approximate numbers. (Scouter Terry Lanktree at eventsassistant@victoriascouts.ca or 250-656-2523)
The basics of scouting started with the idea that it was a school of citizenship through woodcraft. Scouts developed skills and citizenship through camping and fun. This will be incorporated into the camp this year, which will again be run as a competition. This fall’s events include:
- Corral your campsite (troop campsites should be run as a corral, western theme);
- Campfire Chili Cook-off (just like on the trail); and,
- Station competitions (including knots, ropes, and logic puzzle challenges)
Cost is $15 per participant (youth and Leader), (payable to Scouts Canada, GVA) which includes crest, prizes and camping fees.
Troops are expected to arrive at Camp Barnard on Friday night and set-up in the YUKON field. This is the lower back field, past the main parking lot and down the hill. Pit toilets are there as is water. You will not be able to drive to your site; you will be expected to get the pack horse to carry your goods into the homestead.
There will be no specific group activities Friday evening. A campfire will be set up for those who want to join for fun at the creek side fire pit.
Opening will be Saturday at 9 am.
Saturday’s events will include a number of stations, where Scouts will be awarded points. There will be some free time in the late afternoon, where Scouts will be expected to complete their campsite corral. Free time will be followed by a wide game and chili cook-off, which earns points for taste, ingredients, presentation, and cooking method. Note, super hot is NOT a guarantee of success, and “yes”, your Scouts are expected to eat it, too.
Leaders may help with the campsite, but are encouraged to encourage the youth to do as much as possible. Stations are Scout-Only activities; any help from leaders will result in loss of points.
Campfire at 8 pm at Creek Side, again a competition, each troop will be required to have:
- one skit
- one song
- one cheer
- one story/comment/meaningful statement. The goal here is to have one scout from each troop, with the security of the darkness, speak to the camp on an issue such as:
- what scouting means to them,
- something that has impressed or inspired them in the past year,
- a problem they see in the world and a suggestion of how it could be fixed
- a problem they have with a request for comments on how to resolve it
- any serious issue they wish to raise.
The story/comment/meaningful statement is not meant to be long, although it should be at least a minute in development. It should be similar to a Scouter’s Five, but from the perspective of the Scout. If no Scout is prepared to speak then as a last resort a Scouter can fill the gap.
- Participation on these 4 points will be scored and the troops will be judged on their campfire participation.
Sunday opening at 9 am.
Then right into the Wild West Rodeo. The rodeo will be held as a separate competition, with a separate first place award.
Closing and presentations after Scouts Own.
Troops are responsible for their own food, tents, gear, happiness etc.
Leaders: please register using the Event Registration Form.
